PHP coding agents

PHP Skills for AI Coding Agents

Start with four broad workflows for modern PHP practice, review, version upgrades, and PHPUnit. The final card is an explicit Symfony clean-architecture specialist for projects that have chosen that boundary.

Every card is written from its primary SKILL.md file and links to the live skills.sh listing. Read the source before installing it, check the condition label, and choose one workflow for the job in front of the agent instead of stacking overlapping instructions.

How these PHP skills were selected

The core set covers implementation rules, focused language review, runtime migration, and the PHPUnit test framework. Those are broad enough to be useful in a conventional PHP codebase without guessing that it runs a particular framework or deployment target.

The Symfony clean-architecture card remains because its source describes a common, clearly labelled PHP framework boundary. It is conditional rather than a default: only use it in a Symfony 7.x project that has deliberately adopted clean or hexagonal architecture.

This list excludes protocol generators, platform integrations, framework-specific audits, release-only workflows, and playground actions. Those cards are useful in their own narrow contexts, but do not belong in a concise guide to direct PHP development.

Core PHP Work

Start here for PHP work that is not defined by one framework or deployment target. These cards establish modern language practice, review discipline, upgrade planning, and PHPUnit test structure.

PHP Best Practices

3.0K installs AsyrafHussin
Core · Modern PHP standards

Best for: Day-to-day PHP implementation and refactoring on a known PHP 8.x target

PHP Best Practices begins by checking composer.json or the runtime so an agent does not recommend language features the project cannot run. Its rule set separates type-system, modern-PHP, PSR, SOLID, error-handling, performance, and security decisions rather than treating PHP style as one generic prompt.

Use it as the broad implementation card when a PHP task needs a consistent baseline. It is especially useful before local edits spread unchecked choices about strict types, null handling, exceptions, autoloading, prepared statements, or password handling through a project.

  • Version detection before language-feature advice
  • Modern PHP 8.x features mapped to supported versions
  • Strict types, PSR conventions, and exception boundaries
  • Security and performance rules beside implementation guidance

Review PHP

64 installs nesnilnehc
Core · PHP code review

Best for: Reviewing a focused PHP change after its intended scope is already known

Review PHP is an atomic findings workflow rather than a broad architecture or security assessment. It checks strict declarations, error handling, resource cleanup, PSR conventions, namespaces, null safety, iterables, runtime compatibility, and testability within PHP code.

Choose it when a change needs a reviewable list of concrete PHP concerns. Its findings format keeps the card focused on language and runtime behavior, leaving threat modelling and system design to a separate, deliberate review step.

  • Nine PHP language and runtime evaluation dimensions
  • File-and-line findings with remediation suggestions
  • Resource and handle lifecycle checks
  • Explicit boundary from architecture and security audits

PHP Upgrade

38 installs krzysztofsurdy
Core · PHP version upgrade

Best for: Planning or executing a PHP minor-version migration without skipping compatibility evidence

PHP Upgrade treats a runtime change as a staged migration. It starts with the official PHP migration notes, audits the current code and dependencies, uses tools such as PHPCompatibility and Rector where they fit, changes Composer platform constraints, then tests under the target binary.

Use it when a project is moving between supported PHP versions or clearing deprecations before a later move. It is different from normal maintenance because each minor-version boundary has its own language and extension traps.

  • Official migration guide before implementation changes
  • One minor version at a time
  • Compatibility audit and Rector-assisted refactoring
  • Target-runtime tests before release readiness

PHPUnit

312 installs xobotyi
Core · PHPUnit testing

Best for: A PHP project that already uses PHPUnit for unit or integration testing

PHPUnit is the one testing-framework workflow in this guide. It covers PHPUnit 11+ conventions, including PHP attributes for tests and data providers, final test classes, Arrange-Act-Assert structure, and the difference between a stub that supplies state and a mock that verifies behavior.

Use it only where PHPUnit is the project test framework. It is not presented as a replacement for Pest, framework test harnesses, browser testing, or a general testing strategy, which keeps this catalog from collecting near-identical test cards.

  • PHPUnit 11+ attribute-based test metadata
  • Arrange-Act-Assert test structure
  • Clear stub and mock responsibilities
  • Data providers and environment requirement attributes

Architecture Specialist

Use this conditional workflow only when a Symfony project has deliberately adopted clean or hexagonal architecture.

Clean Architecture PHP

92 installs Giuseppe Trisciuoglio
Conditional · Symfony 7.x DDD

Best for: A PHP 8.3+ Symfony project that is intentionally adopting clean or hexagonal architecture

Clean Architecture PHP is an enterprise architecture specialist for PHP 8.3+ and Symfony 7.x. It separates Domain, Application, Adapter, and Infrastructure responsibilities so business rules can be tested without booting Symfony or connecting to a database.

Load it only for projects that have chosen this architecture. Its value is in enforcing ports, immutable value objects, repository adapters, and framework-free use-case tests, not in imposing a Symfony layout on every PHP repository.

  • Domain, Application, Adapter, and Infrastructure layers
  • Ports and adapters around persistence and delivery
  • Immutable value objects and domain invariants
  • In-memory adapters for framework-independent tests

Choose the PHP skill by the boundary in front of you

Start with PHP Best Practices when implementing or refactoring general PHP 8.x code. Add Review PHP when a focused change needs language and runtime findings rather than a broad design discussion.

Choose PHP Upgrade for a runtime migration, and choose PHPUnit only when PHPUnit is already the testing framework. Those two cards solve a release boundary and a test-framework boundary respectively.

The architecture card has a hard entry condition. Use Clean Architecture PHP for PHP 8.3+ Symfony 7.x DDD work after confirming the project has chosen that architecture.

A conditional label is a selection aid. It means the workflow has useful instructions when its assumptions are true, and poor fit when they are not. An agent should inspect composer.json, framework files and the current CI command before loading a specialist card.

Keep PHP skill installs visible with LazySkills

LazySkills shows the skills installed in a project, where they came from, which agents can see them, and whether a source is missing or malformed. Use it to keep one purposeful PHP workflow in view instead of accumulating competing instructions.

Frequently asked questions

Which PHP skill should an agent use for ordinary implementation work?

Start with PHP Best Practices after checking the project PHP version. It is the general implementation baseline in this list. Add Review PHP when the work needs a focused language and runtime review.

Which card handles a PHP version upgrade?

Use PHP Upgrade when moving through a PHP release boundary. It follows official migration notes, compatibility checks, automated refactoring where appropriate, Composer changes, and target-runtime testing.

Is PHPUnit the default PHP testing choice here?

PHPUnit is included for projects that already use PHPUnit. It is the one test-framework card in this guide, not a claim that every PHP repository should adopt PHPUnit or use its version-specific conventions.

Why are the framework and platform cards labelled conditional?

Its instructions depend on a confirmed Symfony 7.x DDD architecture. The label prevents a specialist workflow from being mistaken for a universal PHP default.
